The daughter of a famous movie director and an actress and model since the age of seven, it seems Willa Holland was always destined for stardom. Talented and tenacious, she now arrives on our screens for the third season of “Arrow,” an action drama show following the life of a billionaire playboy who returns home after a long absence to fight crime and corruption as a masked vigilante named Arrow. Holland plays Arrow’s sister Thea Queen, and subsequently has to put up with quite a lot. However, as our encounter with her shows, she appears to be more than up to the task.

DA MAN: Willa, thanks for chatting with DA MAN. Can you tell us a bit about your character thea Queen?
WILLA HOLLAND: Hey, my pleasure! Thea has always been a bit of a wild card, but she’s matured a lot over the years. The end of season two was a bit of a struggle for her to put it lightly, but she comes out in season three with a tougher, stronger side that we haven’t seen before. So watch out! [Laughs]

DA: Arrow has a lot of action-packed fighting scenes. do you have to do any training to prepare for these?
WH: Yes! I’m required to hit the gym daily so I can at least attempt to keep up with my incredible costars and the stunt guys and girls. It’s a lot of work but completely worth it. I find being in shape helps me get into character as I feel ready for anything.

DA: The show has an energetic young cast. What’s the atmosphere like on set?
WH: We have the best cast and crew. I’m sure every show says that, but this statement is 100 percent true in my mind. The general vibe on set is always awesome, as everyone actually gets along which is pretty rare for such a large group shoved together on a hot stage.

DA: “Arrow” is of course based on dc comics character green Arrow. Are you a comic book fan yourself?
WH: As a kid I was always partial to DC Comics rather than Marvel. I was a big fan Batman and the Ra’s al Ghul story line, which is one of the things I’m most excited about for season three. The idea of having the character of Ra’s on the show is just a childhood dream come true.

DA: You’ve primarily been filming in vancouver, canada. do you enjoy travelling with work?
WH: Yes, I do. While I’ve previously worked in Italy for a few months which was fantastic, I have to say that I have just fallen in love with this city. I actually moved here two years ago and now I can’t ever picture myself not having a place here.

DA: Apart from “Arrow,” what else are you working on at the moment?
WH: Though its still in the early stages, my mother and I started working on some clothing designs for fun a while ago which may actually have sprung into something. So between the show, training, and now this little side project, I’m kept pretty busy.

DA: We noticed you’ve performed as a voice actress in several video games. How did this come about?
WH: I don’t really know how it all started but I’m guessing someone really liked my raspy, manly voice for video games! [Laughs] Not complaining at all though, it’s actually really fun.

DA: We hear you’re also a singer and musician. Are we going to see an album from you soon?
WH: Oh no. That’s just for the shower!

DA: What else do you get up to in your spare time?
WH: Photography has always been a big part of my life, so I try to venture out and have fun with that most days. Or just sit on the couch enjoying some “Homeland” or “Game of Thrones” as I’m completely hooked on both right now.

DA: Do you live your life by a certain motto?
WH: S**t happens, change your pants

DA: What has been the proudest moment of your career?
WH: Getting to be in the intro of “Pretty Sweet,” a skateboarding video by Spike Jonze for Girl and Chocolate skateboards.

DA: What are your future aspirations?
WH: I have quite a few, but the main ones will always be to live happy, heathy, and free. And to just continue on doing work that makes me feel exactly that.

DA: What qualities do you look for in a man?
WH: Someone who’s loyal and trust worthy. Oh, and good looking doesn’t hurt! [Laughs]

Who are your top five favorite people in the world?
That could quite possibly be the hardest question to ask, but the obvious list makers would be my mother, father, two sisters, and the fifth would be all of my friends.

Who makes you laugh the most out of anyone you know?
Sam Muller.

Where is your favorite place to be?
[My] number one favorite city in the world so far is definitely Camogli, Italy.

What are the best qualities of a Los Angeles upbringing?
– The warm climate, although it spoils you.
– Access to amazing food (In-N-Out Burger), which again, spoils you.
– And ooh, the beaches…

What are the best qualities about living in Los Angeles now as an adult?
All of the above plus the ability to watch a Clippers game at a dive bar.

You began modeling as a kid. Did having a career so early in life give you certain advantages/preparations/perspective for your future in this business?
It defiantly gave me an interesting perspective of the industry and what it’s like working in it at a young age. It helped prepare me for the rest of my life. Mainly, I learned that the most important thing is to keep your head on your shoulders and feet on the ground.

Do you think you would have been an actor had you not grown up around that world? Do you think you would have had the interest to pursue this path?
Honestly, I can’t say because my life did take this path and, at the time I walked it, I’m not sure I even saw another road. But I couldn’t be happier with the way things have gone.

Did modeling make you more interested in fashion or less?
Fashion is something I will always appreciate, but after a while it didn’t seem like something I wanted to pursue. I’ve always gone up and down with it [as my] sense of values change.

How would you describe your personal style? Do you evolve your look through the years, or does your style change naturally as you mature? Is it something you’re conscious of?
Something I have been conscious of is the older I get, the more relaxed my clothes are. Somewhere around [age] twenty, I just couldn’t get myself to spend money on clothing. I think I went over a year not buying anything new for myself.

You took a little “gap year” a couple years ago. What did you do? What did you find out about yourself? Did you surprise yourself?
That gap taught me a lot, [but] mainly a sense of value that I work on each day to never loose. I went down to San Diego on-and-off for a while, had a house with my childhood friends, and just went back to my reality before the industry. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made, but after a while I wanted to work again, and just learned to find a good balance.

What was it about Arrow that made you decide to commit to another TV series?
There was just something about the script, the way the meeting went, and the timing that was just too perfect not to take if I could!

Were you familiar with the graphic novels that Arrow was based on?
Indeed I am, now more than ever. But I definitely knew about the Green Arrow and Justice League as a whole before the show.

Is Thea Queen (Willa’s character on Arrow) a good or corrupt person? The characters on the show seem to ride a line between both.
Thea is a good girl at heart, but everyone on the show is like an onion—there are many layers to the characters.

Can you name something about yourself that even your friends would be surprised by?
I haven’t eaten bacon in over a week (that is very odd for me).

What do you want to do next?
Anything and everything. I’m open to all new challenges.
